Working with green wood is a revelation. You will be amazed at how the stuff works as you build this two slat “mule ear” chair following the principles of greenwood chairmaking. The design and construction are variations on the way these chairs have been made in Appalachia for 100 years. Gain an understanding of chair design basics, hand tool techniques, draw knife and spokeshave work, shaves horses, and steam bending. While this class is accessible to intermediate woodworkers there is plenty of challenge and fun for seasoned professionals. Be prepared to work hard. We will start with green hickory for the rungs and maple for the legs and slats. Depending on the harvest this year we will either use hickory bark or hemp webbing for the seats. |
