Mortise and tenon joints are used when only the best construction will do. Forget about using biscuits or dowels for your fine furniture. Mortise and tenons have been around for centuries because they’re the best joint for frames, tables, and chairs. Learn how to make these joints with a variety of methods.
Try hand cutting these joints first at the bench. Learn accurate lay-out methods and how to chop out with efficiency and accuracy with your sharp chisels. Get practice sawing to a line to create your tenons and learn how fine tune a tenon with a shoulder plane.
Next spend some time routing mortises for both through and stopped joints on the router table. You can also cut tenons on the router table with some simple set-ups. Learn how to fine tune a joint with a simple slip of paper. Also discover how to pin, wedge, and use interlocking tenons for chair, table, and frame constructions.
