If you learn how to use cutting tools like the hand plane, the spokeshave, and the scraper, you will transform your woodworking. The simple geometry of the wedge and the sharpness of an edge will make dull wood shine and turn rough wood glass smooth. It’s a wonder people still sand when they can hand plane.
We will show you how to tune and use these tools in this one day workshop. You will get practice with several different types of hand planes, a flat spokeshave, and card and cabinet scrapers. They will change how you approach joinery, shaping, and finishing.
Learn which planes to buy, find new, or find used. You’ll get practice taking them apart and learning the parts that are truly important. Discover how to use them effectively and efficiently and get practice tuning and using them on hard and soft woods. Learn how to flatten stock on both faces and edges and how to read a board for grain direction.
The spokeshave can cut circles around any other tool because of its short sole. Learn how to tune and use this tool for shaping templates in MDF or solid wood stock like for table or chair legs. You will get practice on both concave and convex surfaces and learn how to true a curve to take out the high spots. No spindle sander can match it.
Finally learn how to tune up that mysteriously simple tool, the scraper. Both the card and cabinet scraper take some knowledge to use but you’ll learn how to cut with them in any direction successfully. Once you master sharpening them, a new world of surfacing wood opens up to you. Come and see how these simple pieces of steel can change how you prep stock for finishing.
