Policies

Woodworking is a dangerous craft. It is also one that depends upon the individual to fully understand its consequences. Ignoring safety practices, using tools improperly, or operating tools under the influence of alcohol or drugs may lead to serious injury. Don’t attempt any technique unless you fully understand it. It is our role to provide you with instruction, so rely on us for assistance and guidance. There are no stupid questions you can ask, so please take advantage of our expertise. We will ask you to sign a liability awareness and release form before beginning any workshop.

Registration Information
Class fees are comprised of tuition and a materials fee. Materials cost will not be determined until the end of class unless already specified on our website.

Paying with credit card
We accept all major credit cards. You may pay with credit card online through Paypal (see class schedules) or by calling the Studio at (503) 284-1644. Some classes offer an option to pay only a deposit. Full payment (or a deposit if applicable) is required to secure your spot in a class.

Paying by check
Download the registration form and mail it with your payment. Again, some classes offer an option to pay only a deposit. Full payment (or a deposit if applicable) is required to secure your spot in a class.

Summer Term
Summer classes require a one-time, non-refundable Summer Term registration fee of $25 (regardless of number of classes taken). To pay with PayPal, you must pay the registration fee as a separate transaction from the tuition fee. If paying by check, you may combine tuition and registration.

Refunds
Summer class refunds are available until 30 days prior to the class starting. The Summer registration fee is non-refundable. Refunds for concentrations and week-long classes are available up to two weeks prior to the start of class. Refunds for all other classes can be made until 72 hours prior to the first meeting of the class.
Refunds can be made using the original payment method. Refunds for PayPal payments will be deducted 3% for the PayPal transaction fee. Any refund can also be transferred as a credit or gift certificate to any class or materials within the next year.

Privacy Policy
It is our expressed policy not to sell or otherwise share customer name or contact information with other companies. This includes companies you might like. Any information provided to The Northwest Woodworking Studio will remain confidential. If you request information on classes, we will put your name on our mailing list. To be removed from our mailing list or to update your address, please contact us.

Taking Your Brain for a Stroll

A,

Returning to our conversation on designing work, I want to say that I know how easy it is to avoid practicing being a designer. When learning any new skill that is difficult and doesn’t come naturally, we can find all sorts of good excuses not to [...] Continue Reading…

Running Through the Sprinkler

From a student:
I have jumped between many different styles (federal interpretation, contemporary, krenovian – if that’s a style) in the past year, I feel myself being drawn more and more towards the work of the mid-century modernists -the Scandanavians in particular. The simplicity, functionalism, craftsmanship, [...] Continue Reading…

Many Thanks!

My friends and colleagues and to those who after all this time just manage to speak to me at all:

I want to thank those of you who wrote letters of support for the Studio during our dance with the City of Portland over code issues. [...] Continue Reading…

You Don’t See It?

Some years ago, I worked in a large old building that had once been a furniture factory. It had been  converted mostly into a large empty space, but it also sported about a dozen small woodworking shops up on the second floor. It was a great old space if [...] Continue Reading…

Advice

I just reread Steve Jobs’ commencement address to the Stanford graduating class of 2005. Look it up. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. These are his final words of advice to the students. It is a wonderful speech about the value of failure, the incredible connections that can occur between disparate [...] Continue Reading…
